What Emily Dickinson Teaches Us about the Psalms
Attend in person or virtually - Register here
Biblicists are not the only scholars with the challenge of textual variation. Scholars of the poetry of Emily Dickinson have long faced a similar challenge, and their insights can help us think in new ways about the biblical Psalms, both as a collection and pluriform text. Join us as Boston College Clough School of Theology and Ministry Professor Andrew R. Davis shares what Emily Dickinson teaches us about the Psalms.

23rd ANNUAL EVELYN UNDERHILL LECTURE IN CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY
Encountering God through Sacred Art, Prophetic Text, and Bodily Experience
Attend in person - Register here
How and where do we encounter God? The prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel saw visions of God at crucial moments in their people’s history. The sacred texts that record their visions and oracles make it possible for later audiences to similarly experience God’s presence and summons, while the sacred art of illumination makes this invitation vibrant and compelling. As we discover the invitation prophetic text and sacred illumination hold for Christian spirituality, join us as Professor Anathea Portier-Young examines key passages from these prophetic books and their illuminations in The Saint John’s Bible.
Advance registration required - space is limited.
Sponsored by the Boston College Clough School of Theology and Ministry

Did Early Christian Ireland have a Unique (“Celtic”) Liturgical Rite?
Attend in person - Register here
While the category of Celtic Rite is not accepted by any mainstream liturgical scholar today, it is still alive and well in the popular imagination. Fr. Neil Xavier O’Donoghue endeavors to examine the roots of the theory of a “Celtic Rite,” the influence of first Anglican and later Roman Catholic self interests in maintaining this Rite’s existence, and the conclusions that can be drawn on the subject today. Fr. O’Donoghue proposes that the theory of a “Celtic Rite” has actually impoverished both the study of early Irish liturgy and the field of general early medieval Western liturgy.

The Synod, The Spirit, and Women in Ministry
Attend in person or virtually - Register here
As we journey together as church, to what might the Spirit now be inviting women? The XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops concluded by urging discernment, listening, and conversation as a way of life for us as church. Attentive to the activity of the Holy Spirit, we seek to “expand possibilities for participation and for the exercise of differentiated co-responsibility by all the Baptised, men and women.”

“Communion, Participation, and Mission,” the theme for the Synod on Synodality reflects the life and aspiration of the Catholic Church. How do we come together in Christ with our human diversity? How do we contribute through our various vocations and ministries to the shared life of faith? And how do we carry the message of the Gospel out into the world in fruitful ways? In this course we reflect on these issues of being church as well as the Church’s teaching role, sacramentality, differences of culture, and the tension between the Church’s transcendent nature and its engagement with the human world.
“We are convinced that the Church must look with penetrating eyes within itself, ponder the mystery of its own being, and draw enlightenment and inspiration” -Pope Paul VI Ecclesiam Suam 9.
